Jøtul has produced fireplaces from cast iron since 1853*. This is an extremely durable and reliable material that endures high temperatures and rapid changes in temperature making it the perfect material for your wood burning stove.
Jøtul consider the impact its products have on the environment wherever possible so use recycled scrap iron from local scrap dealers. It is then melted down and any waste is removed at the same time as carbon and other alloying elements are added to the material. When the melted iron has reached the correct temperature, it is analysed in a lab at the Kråkerøy facility and if necessary, extra alloying elements are added to ensure that the cast iron lives up to the famous Jøtul quality. The liquid iron is then poured into moulds of sand to cool down before the cast parts are turned into the Jøtul wood stoves.

As cast iron is suited for extreme temperature conditions, it is an excellent form stable material which means that it does not twist or strain itself when it gets hot. An example of this is the difference you get if your pour cold water on to a hot cooking tray; despite both being made from almost the same material, they react completely differently to temperature changes. Where your cooking will change its shape, the cast iron will retain its original form.
This is also what makes it a highly durable material. For the same reason that car manufacturers choose to produce their engine blocks from cast iron, Jøtul choose to produce their wood stoves and fireplaces from cast iron. Jøtul have a 25-year guarantee on all external cast iron parts, but they are expected to last for a whole generation if not longer, so no compromises regarding material quality are made.
As well as ensuring quality and durability, cast iron can of course be produced in 3D moulds. This makes it possible to create Jøtul’s more detailed designs including angles, corners, and different patterns, increasing the quality of the products both visually and functionally. Products therefore come across as unified, robust and leaving out seam welds that are exposed to fatigue damage over time.
There are many different varieties of stoves and fireplaces to choose from, all with Jøtul's well-known quality.
